Robzilla Top 25 Singles of 2010
This is actually the first time I’ve sat down and done a Top 25 for the year… I think cause I saw a bunch of other year-end lists and I was like, “Wait, what?” This isn’t what got the most plays or the most requests — this is the stuff I like best from a songwriting perspective. It’s not even just DJing stuff — my man Neil Diamond is on there too, for his work with Rick Rubin.
Compared to what I played in 2009, there’s a lot less rap and R&B. It just wasn’t the year for rap. It was, however, the year for Gyptian. Hold Yuh was the summer anthem, and let me just ruin any suspense and say that it’s my #1 for the year. OBVI. And he got my #2 as well. Apologies to anyone I drove past with the windows down bumping Gyptian this year. Nah, not apologizing!
Other than that, some people who were just crushing in 2010 generally: Vybz, Busy, Mr. Lexx, Ricky Blaze, Natalie Storm, Swizz Beatz, Fred the Godson, Joell Ortiz, Lloyd Banks (seriously, Lloyd Banks came back?), Vampire Weekend. I’m excited for 2011.

The story behind Tom Tom Club’s “Wordy Rappinghood,” one of the all-time classics from the early ’80s — including where all those nonsense lyrics came from!!
I don’t know if it’s this whole Americana thing that everyone’s doing, but I’ve been really hung up on vintage hiking gear. This goes from the boots (Vasque Sundowners, if you’re asking) to wool socks to down jackets. This vintage North Face one looks amazing — just the right shine. I wonder if they’re reproducing any of this stuff for their Purple Label in Japan.
Sunday Park Action
Sunday afternoon was a nice big block party put on by A New York Thing on Forsyth Street. It was sweaty as two balls in a bag. The kids were riding bikes and skateboards. People were dressed to the nines and looking good, or dressed like scum and looking good. Everyone I spoke to was really down to earth, on their Sunday-in-the-park vibe. And I got the free t-shirt out of it… Ima cut the sleeves off of it… more of these block jams, damn it!!!!!!
